Stopping the Abuse Problem Before it Occurs
One of the most effective methods to deter a substance abuse problem is
Prevention. The Grove Counseling Center offers an array of Prevention
Programs in Seminole County that target youth and their families in
both the school and community. Staff partnered with neighborhood associations
and community leaders, The Grove organizes events and programs to help
high-risk areas promote healthier and safer neighborhoods.
For every dollar spent on Prevention Programs, 50 dollars in
treatment is saved. Described below are the Prevention Programs currently
offered by The Grove:
- The Strengthening Families Program works with middle school students
and their families. The program helps families focus on healthy beliefs,
clear standards, bonding, family management skills, and increases
in family cohesion.
- The ALPHA Program is an in-school prevention program for elementary
students whose behavior interferes with academic performance.
- Sankofo is a rites-of-passage program for young African-Americans
that builds self-esteem and self-knowledge through culturally specific
learning and activities.
- Drugs, Violence, and Safety (D.V.S.) takes place in five elementary
schools. A Prevention Specialist provides education and training from
Kindergarten through the Fourth Grade.
