Why Outpatient?

The primary purpose of the Children’s Outpatient Treatment program is to determine the level of dysfunction in the adolescent’s life created by mental health issues. It is also intended to help facilitate clients in learning a set of principles and guidelines that will enable them to improve their behavior and emotional responses to life’s situations. Each prospective client is screened to determine appropriateness for treatment in an outpatient setting. Counselors provide services at the Longwood office and, on a limited basis, as an overlay service at sites approved by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program Office. Individualized treatment is provided to each client and personal goals are established to help him/her realize dysfunctional areas and create an attitude desirous of living a stress free and healthy lifestyle.

The focus of outpatient treatment is interruption and recovery from life’s challenges. To accomplish this purpose, the clinical approaches used incorporate a broad range of intervention strategies to educate the client about mental health disorders/issues and how it has impacted the client’s life.  Utilizing individual therapy as the basic regimen, Reality Therapy, Cognitive and Behavioral therapy are the primary psychotherapy techniques utilized while the client’s skills and awareness are enhanced in life skill areas including coping, problem-solving, and communication skills. Family counseling is also utilized.  We believe the entire family will benefit from a concerted effort and willingness to support the client in the outpatient program The Grove views mental health disorders as impacting multiple areas of the client’s life.  These areas include, but are not limited to, social support, employment/school, mental health, medical, and legal.  As the client progresses in these areas, more emphasis is then placed on personal growth.  Personal growth areas will include but are not limited to self-esteem, family roles, responsibility, accountability, denial, acceptance and tolerance of self and others.

Medical services are also part of The Grove’s Outpatient services. If the primary therapist determines, along with the client that psychiatric evaluation to include possible medication management is necessary, then a referral to The Grove’s psychiatrist is made.
