The Alpha Model

Based at English Estates Elementary School, the Grove's Alpha Model targets elementary-aged students who are struggling with academics, disruptive classroom behavior, low self-esteem, anger management, peer pressure, or coping with grief.

Program Purpose

Alpha students are more likely to demonstrate academic and social gains through peer interaction, positive school experiences and preventive counseling. Alpha aims to prevent the development of more severe, inappropriate behavior patterns, which if left unattended could lead to the child dropping out of school, teen pregnancy or alcohol and drug abuse.

Who is eligible?
Alpha is offered to third through fifth grade students ages 9 to 12.

Alpha is geared towards students who show early signs of having future problems with academics, social skills, problem solving, and coping skills. Some evident behaviors include:
  • Academic underachievement
  • Classroom disruption
  • Withdrawal, sadness or crying
  • Yields easily to peer pressure
  • Disrespectful, defiant or rude
  • Parent and child conflict
  • Difficulty making friends
  • Difficulty handling grief
  • Low self-esteem
Family Participation
Family participation is a key component. Children experience greater success when their family are in close communication with the Alpha counselor and the school.  Frequent phone or email conversations between family and the Alpha counselor are encouraged.
